After Market retired after scratching from Breeders’ Cup Mile

Wet weather prevented Pam and Marty Wygod’s homebred After Market from contesting his planned final race as trainer John Shirreffs scratched the four-year-old Storm Cat colt when the Monmouth Park turf course came up soft for the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).
The scratch ended After Market’s career, and he has arrived at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky, where he will stand his initial season for $30,000.
“It’s a real shame the weather came as it did because John said he was just training beautifully, that he had never trained this well before,” Farish said. “But he just does not like soft ground.”
Wet ground also prevented After Market from contesting the Arlington Million Stakes (G1), although he made the most of his spring-summer by winning four consecutive graded stakes races during a four-month period, including the Charles Whittingham Memorial (G1) and Eddie Read (G1) Handicaps in Southern California.
After Market won eight of 13 races, including six graded stakes, and earned $903,685. He last raced on September 29, when he finished second by a half-length to Trippi’s Storm in the Kelso Handicap (G2).
After Market is out of dual Grade 1 winner Tranquility Lake, by Rahy. After Market’s full brother, Jalil, sold for $9.7-million at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale.
