Garden City winner Alexander Tango dies after accident

Posted: Wednesday, November 07, 2007 2:31 PM

Alexander Tango (Ire), who won the Garden City Stakes (G1) in September at Belmont Park, died from injuries suffered in a freak accident on October 30.

The three-year-old Danehill Dancer filly became frightened and injured herself on a paddock fence at Woods Edge Farm in Lexington.

“It is a shame as she was such a good filly, and we were all looking forward to racing her again next year,” Fozzy Stack, the son of trainer Tommy Stack, told Racing Post.

The Irish-based Alexander Tango won the Garden City by three-quarters of a length over eventual Grade 1 winner Bit of Whimsy on September 8 at Belmont Park. She remained in New York and finished seventh in the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (G1) on September 29.

Alexander Tango also won the Derrinstown Stud One Thousand Guineas Trial (Ire-G3) and Kilboy Estate Stakes and finished second in the United Arab Emirates Royal Whip Stakes (Ire-G2) for owner Noel O'Callaghan.

Bred by Philip Brady, Alexander Tango won four of 12 career starts and earned $357,012.
