Showing Up sidelined indefinitely

SHOWING UP

Dual Grade 1 winner Showing Up will be sidelined for at least three months after an ultrasound revealed a tear in the suspensory ligament in his left front leg.

The four-year-old Strategic Mission colt was preparing for the Manhattan Handicap (G1) on June 9 at Belmont Park when trainer Barclay Tagg discovered the injury.

“I'm not going to run him for three months,” Tagg told Daily Racing Form. “I'm going to see if I can get it better. It's pretty minor right now, and if I can get it better I'd like to get it better.

“I'm not even going to think about the Breeders' Cup; I'm not going to think about his year. I just want to get it better first. A lot of those things can heal up in three months. Maybe it will, maybe it won't, I don't know. We're going to give it every chance.”"

Owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables, Showing Up won seven of nine starts as a three-year-old after he was unraced as a juvenile.

He won the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course on April 22 and entered the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) undefeated in three starts. Showing Up and Florida Derby (G1) Barbaro, trained by Michael Matz, made the Jacksons the first owners ever to start two unbeaten horses in the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro went on to win the Derby while Showing Up finished sixth.

After the Kentucky Derby, Tagg opted to try Showing Up on the grass and the colt rewarded Tagg for his decision with consecutive victories in the $1-million Colonial Turf Cup Stakes and the Secretariat Stakes (G1).

After finishing third in his first test against older horses in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) in September, Showing Up rebounded with convincing victories in the Jamaica Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) on October 14 and the Hollywood Derby (G1) on November 26 to close the season.

Showing Up finished second by a neck in the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course on April 23 to open his four-year-old campaign.
