Grade 2 winner Inesperado euthanized after breakdown

Posted: Monday, May 21, 2007 5:54 PM

Multiple graded stakes winner Inesperado (Fr) was euthanized after breaking down in a $9,675 claiming race on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

The eight-year-old Zayyani (Ire) horse was racing for a $4,000 claiming price. Ridden by jockey Carlos Silva, Inesperado was rated in sixth and broke down shortly after the half-mile pole before being vanned off.

Inesperado began his career in France and won the Prix Delahante for owner A. Capozzi and trainer J. Rossi as a two-year-old.

Inesperado was shipped to trainer Bobby Frankel as a three-year-old for owner 2 Plus U Stable. He enjoyed his most lucrative campaign that season, winning the 2002 Cinema Breeders’ Cup (G3) and La Jolla (G3) Handicaps before defeating Grade 1 winner Johar in the Del Mar Derby (G2) later that year. He closed the season with a victory in the Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Following his three-year-old season, Inesperado won only once—during his five-year-old season in 2004—and spent the latter part of his racing career competing in claiming races.

He was claimed by Craig Lewis for Round Table Stable for $40,000 in August 2006 and was winless in nine starts for his new connections.

Out of the Ela-Mana-Mou mare Ile Mamou, Inesperado won nine of 37 career starts and  earned $688,580.
