Jockey Zimmerman earns 1,000th career win

Jockey Ramsey Zimmerman earned his 1,000th career win by rallying Spend a Web to a neck victory in the sixth race on Sunday at Lone Star Park.

Zimmerman began riding in 1998 and has earned two of his wins in graded stakes races.

He earned his most lucrative victory by winning the $250,000 Hawthorne Derby (G3) with Minor Wisdom in 1999. Zimmerman also guided Cloudy’s Knight to victory in the $200,000 Fair Grounds Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) on February 10.

From 6,209 starters, Zimmerman has compiled purse earnings of $13,890,231.

“I’ve been around horses my whole life, and I’ve always been small enough, and this is what I’ve always wanted to do,” Zimmerman said. “I came up in Chicago, and at the time they had a really strong jockey colony. I looked up to guys like Earlie Fires, Mark Guidry, and Carlos Silva.”

Zimmerman earned his first career win as a 16-year-old at Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Illinois. He won a career-high 326 races in 2004 to rank fourth among North American riders by victories. Zimmerman finished second to Chris Emigh in the 2006 Hawthorne Race Course fall meeting rider standings.

Zimmerman and Cliff Berry were tied for the lead in the Lone Star riding standings with 19 wins apiece through Saturday. Berry overtook Corey Lanerie as Lone Star’s all-time leading rider after earning his 478th career win at the Grand Prairie, Texas, track by rallying Haveuseenthelight to victory in Sunday’s fifth race.
