Tough Tiz’s Sis scores first stakes victory in WinStar Oaks

Tough Tiz’s Sis pulled away for an easy 3 3/4-length triumph and scored her first stakes win in the $200,000 WinStar Oaks on Sunday at Sunland Park. 

Sent off as the even-money favorite in the nine-horse field, the Tiznow filly settled in second behind pacesetter Lauras Last Music, powered past that opponent at the three-sixteenths pole, and opened a commanding two-length lead in early stretch.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Tough Tiz’s Sis continued to distance herself from eight challengers in the 1 1/16-mile race for three-year-old fillies, completing the distance in 1:45.18 on a fast track.

Swiss Current finished second, three-quarters of length in front of Purely Surprized. Lauras Last Music faded to last.

Trained by Bob Baffert for Watson and Weitman Performances, Tough Tiz’s Sis entered off a half-length victory in an allowance/optional claiming race at Santa Anita Park on February 25. Tough Tiz’s Sis finished second in an allowance/optional claiming race on January 25 in her three-year-old debut.

Bred in Kentucky by Gary Tussey, Tough Tiz’s Sis improved to three wins, one second, and one third from six starts and increased his earnings to $184,140. She is one of five winners from six starters out of stakes-placed winner Leaseholder, by Taylor’s Falls.
