Catman Running steps up to win first stakes in John Battaglia Memorial

Posted: Saturday, March 03, 2007 10:34 PM

by Ron Parker

Joe Harris’s Catman Running made his stakes debut his third consecutive victory Saturday as he posted a 1 3/4-length victory over 1.30-to-1 favorite Joe Got Even in the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park.

Historically a prep for Turfway’s Lane’s End Stakes (G2) to be run on March 24, the Battaglia brought together a field of 11 three-year-olds with hopes that a strong performance might put them into the Triple Crown mix.

With jockey Willie Martinez in the irons, Catman Running settled in closely behind pace-setters Bubber and Tanyard Hill in the 1 1/16-mile contest and was able to maintain his momentum despite having to steady at the seven-eighths pole. The Tactical Cat colt came three-wide around the turn to take the lead and draw clear late with a final clocking of 1:46.42.

Joe Got Even raced in midpack early and mounted a rally in the lane, but lost some momentum when he had to steady in traffic at the sixteenth-pole before coming on again to finish second, a length clear of Cobrador.

Trained by Eric Reed, Catman Running opened his career finishing eighth to Teuflesberg and runner-up Ravel in a maiden race last fall at Keeneland Race Course. But it has been nothing but winner’s circle pictures since, beginning with a maiden tally at Hawthorne Race Course on December 22 followed by an easy allowance win at Turfway on January 27.

While he may remain low on the Triple Crown radar for now, his versatility might make him an interesting colt to follow. He set almost all the pace in the Hawthorne win, but closed from last in the Turfway allowance event after a rough start.

Out of the Dr. Blum mare Nurse Dopey, Catman Running has earned $90,685.
