Lady Belsara goes wire to wire in Chicago Handicap

LADY BELSARA

by K. T. Donovan

Switching leads was a problem for Lady Belsara in the $175,000 Chicago Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Arlington Park.

Winning was not.

Despite not switching leads until deep stretch, Lady Belsara turned back runner-up Trendy Lady and earned her first career graded stakes win in a half-length victory.

“She ran a really big race. My horse really dug in and tried hard,” jockey E.T. Baird said. “The owners gave me instructions to try to get her to change leads. I tried a couple of times, but she was a little stubborn about it, so I figured I’d better go ahead and start riding her. She finally switched about ten yards from the wire.”

At the Moment Stables’ Lady Balsara set a pressured pace on the inside and opened a one-length lead through a quarter-mile in :22.79. The Boundary filly led by a half-length through a half-mile in :45.37, and maintained her advantage to the finish while winning the seven-furlong race in 1:23.10 on Polytrack.

Grade 3-placed stakes winner Dimple Pinch finished third, one length behind Grade 3-placed winner Trendy Lady.

Matt Kintz trains Lady Belsara, who entered off a third-place finish in the Fit for a Queen Stakes on May 19 at Arlington.

The bay filly has earned four wins in seven starts over two seasons and earned $175,860. Bred in Kentucky by Bronze Bell Farm and Partners, Lady Belsara is the first winner out of the unraced Unbridled mare Wolfendale Island.
