Jalil, $9.7-million Storm Cat colt, earns first win

Jalil, a $9.7-million purchase at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale by John Ferguson, chief bloodstock adviser for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, earned a half-length victory in his third career start on Wednesday at Ripon.

Frankie Dettori rode Jalil in the 9.77-furlong turf race. The Storm Cat colt out of multiple Grade 1 winner Tranquility Lake, by Rahy, entered off a runner-up finish on May 18 at Newbury for Saeed bin Suroor, who trains Jalil for Godolphin Management Co.

Jalil’s purchase price is the fourth-highest paid for a yearling at a North American auction. A syndicate of bidders led by Stavros Niarchos purchased Seattle Dancer for a world-record $13.1-million at the 1985 Keeneland July selected yearling sale.

Three-year-old Jalil is a full brother to multiple graded stakes winner After Market. Grade 1 winner Caveat and multiple Grade 2 winner Benchmark are notable family members.
