Flying Zee Stable’s Cosmonaut earned a repeat victory in the $200,000 Arlington Handicap (G3) with a front-running 2 1/4-length score as the 7-to-10 favorite on Saturday during Arlington Million Preview Day at Arlington Park.

Cosmonaut remained in control the entire way while setting a measured pace under jockey Julien Leparoux to finish in 2:01.32 on turf rated good.

“We ran in the Arlington Million (G1) [last year] and he was beaten by two lengths,” said winning trainer Patrick Biancone. “Hopefully, we’ll come back in three weeks and run better.”

Revved Up challenged from a stalking position and closed strongly to finish 2 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Go Between.

A five-year-old Lemon Drop Kid horse, Cosmonaut was expected to be a leading contender in the Arlington Handicap, but he has often encountered hard luck. Leparoux was forced to check Cosmonaut at the start of the Arlington Million (G1) last year and he finished a non-threatening fifth.

Cosmonaut finished within a length of Better Talk Now in his previous start in the 1 1/4-mile Manhattan Handicap (G1) on June 9, but placed fourth after weakening in the final strides.

Prior to the Manhattan, Cosmonaut was steered wide of fallen rival Mending Fences on the backstretch of the Dixie Handicap (G2) at Pimlico Race Course but still rallied to finish second.

Cosmonaut will be pointed to the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million, a race which would be his first Grade 1 victory. He has earned $700,557 with six wins, four seconds, and one third in 24 career starts.

Cosmonaut is one of five winners from as many starters produced by Grade 2-placed winner Cosmic Fire, by Capote.
