ALWAYS FIRST

Four Footed Fotos

by Jenny Blandford

Always First (GB) challenged pacesetter Cloudy’s Knight through a prolonged stretch duel before taking over to narrowly win the $200,000 Stars and Stripes Turf Handicap (G3) by a nose on Wednesday at Arlington Park.

Sent off as the 1.70-to-1 favorite in the seven-horse field, Always First was reserved in fifth through a half-mile under jockey Robby Albarado while Cloudy’s Knight set early fractions of :25.88 for the opening quarter and :52.05 for a half-mile.

The Barathea (Ire) gelding made his winning bid approaching the far turn and rallied to battle with Cloudy’s Knight through the stretch.

A determined Cloudy’s Knight battled back gamely but was caught at the wire. Stream Cat, who raced off the rail throughout, rallied late but could not catch the leaders and finished third, three-quarters of a length behind Cloudy’s Knight.

Final time for the 1 1/2-mile race on soft turf was 2:31.87.

Trained by Tom Voss for Merriefield Farm and Charles Noell, Always First was the runner-up in the Louisville Handicap (G3) on May 26 at Churchill Downs in his previous start. He opened his six-year-old campaign with a runner-up finish to Ascertain (Ire) in the Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes (G3) on April 27 at Keeneland Race Course.

Always First’s victory in the 2005 Sunset Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) is his only other graded stakes win.

Out of the English stakes winning Dilum mare Pink Cristal, Always First improved to five wins in 17 career starts while earning $431,552.
