In a successful return to his favorite distance, Silver Wagon scored a 1 ¼-length victory in the $300,000 General George Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) at seven furlongs on Monday at Laurel Park.

The six-year-old by Wagon Limit cut back after finishing third to McCann’s Mojave in the Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on January 27 at Gulfstream Park.

Silver Wagon’s two previous graded stakes victories also were at seven furlongs, in the 2003 Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course and ’06 Sport Page Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct. Monday’s victory pushed the gray or roan horse to the brink of seven figures with a career bankroll of $979,193.

Jockey Edgar Prado waited patiently for an opening on the inside before swinging Silver Wagon outside in the stretch in a well-timed rally to overtake Ah Day, who had opened up a clear advantage after assuming command on the backstretch.

Silver Wagon stopped the clock in 1:23.17 over a fast track as the 9-to-10 favorite in the field of nine. Tony Dutrow served as the trainer of record for Silver Wagon since his brother, Richard Dutrow Jr., is serving a 14-day suspension for an infraction in New York.

Ah Day finished second, and Ryan’s for Real followed another 1 ½ lengths back in third.

In fetching a $120,000 payday in the Sunshine Millions and another $180,000 on Monday, Silver Wagon already has earned more this year than in any of his four previous seasons except 2005, when he collected $318,065 and finished second in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) and third in the Forego Stakes (G1).

Bred in Florida by Leverett and Linda Miller, Silver Wagon has won six of 23 career starts.
