Grade 3 winner Fort Prado named Illinois Horse of the Year

Team Block’s Grade 3 winner Fort Prado was selected the 2006 Illinois Horse of the Year, champion older handicap male, and champion male turf horse, Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation President Gary Moore said on Thursday.

The six-year-old El Prado (Ire) horse won four of seven starts in 2006, including the Fair Grounds Breeders’ Cup (G3) and the John B. Connally Breeders’ Cup Turf (G3) Handicaps at Louisiana Downs and Sam Houston Race Park, respectively.

Fort Prado has won 12 of 30 career starts and earned $727,130.

Voting for divisional and reserve champions was conducted by members of the Illinois racing media and racing secretaries.

Hawthorne Derby (G3) winner Best of Buddies was named champion three-year-old colt/gelding and reserve champion male turf horse, and Tally Up was the reserve champion three-year-old colt/gelding.

Lyrique Handicap and Ribbon Handicap winner Rich Fantasy was named champion three-year-old filly and reserve champion female turf horse, and Rolling Sea was the reserve champion three-year-old filly.

Other divisional winners include champion two-year-old colt/gelding Caruso, reserve champion Corrupt; champion two-year-old filly Copper State, reserve champion Magnetic Miss; reserve champion older handicap male Wiggins; champion older handicap female Pretty Jenny, reserve champion Stop a Train; and champion female turf horse Ms. Lydonia.
