MASTER COMMAND

Four Footed Fotos

Aaron and Marie Jones’s Master Command easily overhauled pacesetter Sweetnorthernsaint after six furlongs and romped unchallenged to a 3 ¾-length victory in the $250,000 National Jockey Club Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Hawthorne Race Course.

The race was billed as a match between multiple graded stakes winner Master Command and Illinois Derby (G2) winner Sweetnorthernsaint and unfolded that way in the early stages as Master Command pressed at the flank of his opponent through the first half-mile before rallying under John Velazquez.

Taking charge at the top of the stretch Master Command, the 2-to-5 favorite, drew off and increased his lead to four lengths before completing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.47 on a fast track.

Velazquez said pressing Sweetnorthernsaint was the strategy.

“I wanted to stay right next to him and not give him too much of a breather,” Velazquez said. “He was doing it pretty comfortably. I didn’t have to help him.”

With Mario Pino at the reins, Sweetnorthernsaint led out of the gate despite stumbling at the start and set a quick pace of :46.86 for the first half-mile. Approaching the six-furlong mark, the Sweetsouthernsaint gelding maintained his advantage but Velazquez rallied Master Command, who willingly surged past.

“I tapped him on the shoulders a few times to keep him alert, but otherwise he did it real nice,” Velazquez said of Master Command, who is out of the Lord At War (Arg) mare Lady Lochinvar.

Sweetnothernsaint finished second, 37 ¼ lengths in front of well-beaten Le Jester, who finished third in the four-horse field.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Master Command remained unbeaten in three starts this year and entered off a 3 ½-length win in the New Orleans Handicap (G2) on March 10 at Fair Grounds. He began the season with a six-length victory in the Mineshaft Handicap (G3) at the New Orleans track on February 10.

The A.P. Indy horse, who was bred in Pennsylvania by Brushwood Stable, improved to eight wins in 15 career starts, including a victory in the 2006 Meadowlands Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2), while increasing his earnings to $1,100,893.
