Kettleoneup powers from behind to capture Sixty Sails Handicap

KETTLEONEUP

Four Footed Fotos

by Ron Parker

After a near miss in her previous start, Tom Crouch’s homebred Kettleoneup added a graded stakes victory to her resume Saturday as she charged from last to first to win the $250,000 Sixty Sails Handicap (G3) at Hawthorne Race Course.

The Sixty Sails was expected to be just another day at the office for the Todd Pletcher trained Mo Cuishle, and with Pletcher’s go-to jockey John Velazquez in town for the mount, Mo Cuishle entered the starting gate at even money.

The four-year-old Saint Ballado filly went right to the lead in the 1 1/8-mile race, with Rolling Sea determined not to let the favorite get away, inching up to even terms with the leader after six furlongs in 1:11.41.

Mo Cuishle had no response to the challenge as Rolling Sea moved into the lead, but My Chickadee quickly came calling in a bid for the win. Kettleoneup, who had been last of five in the early going and fourth going into the far turn, began her move under jockey Calvin Borel and, widest of all, came charging down the lane to easily pass the dueling front-runners and pull away for a solid 3 ¾-length victory, crossing the finish line in 1:50.89.

My Chickadee, lugging in during the late stages, held second, 2 ½ lengths clear of Rolling Sea as a tiring Mo Cuishle checked in fourth.

Unraced at two, Kettleoneup was a modest allowance runner last year, but had been steadily improving this year for trainer Michael Tomlinson at Oaklawn Park, finishing second in the Pippin Stakes and a close second to India in the Azeri Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G3) prior to her Hawthorne victory. Kettleoneup, who is out of the Storm Cat mare Bugs Rabbit, improved to four wins in 11 career starts and boosted her earnings to $267,279.
