Godolphin Racing’s Grade 1 winner Ashkal Way (Ire), who has won seven of eight starts since coming to the United States last year, will be out indefinitely as he recovers from a tendon injury in his right front leg.

“It is a great shame as we were looking forward to seeing him have another good season in America,” said Simon Crisford, Godolphin’s racing manager. “We will give him all the time he needs to make a full recovery before he resumes training.”

The five-year-old Ashkalani horse won his final three starts of 2006, including the Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2) at Saratoga Race Course, the Kelso Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park, and the Citation Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park, before opening the 2007 season with a victory in the Lure Stakes on April 1 at Gulfstream Park.

Trained in the United States by Godolphin assistant trainer Rick Mettee, Ashkal Way has won nine of 17 career starts and earned $798,349. He was being pointed to the $300,000 Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on May 28 at Hollywood Park before the injury.
