Guidry plans to retire this summer

Too competitive for an extended farewell tour, veteran jockey Mark Guidry plans to retire this summer after a return to Arlington Park.

Guidry, 47, who is closing in on 5,000 career victories, registered many of those wins at Chicago-area tracks Arlington, Sportsman’s Park, and Hawthorne Race Course. A member of the Hawthorne Hall of Fame, Guidry has won seven riding titles there, nine at Sportsman’s, and two at Arlington.

Guidry’s top stakes wins include the 2002 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (G1) aboard Riskaverse, the 2005 Santa Anita Derby (G1) on Buzzards Bay, and the 2006 Kentucky Oaks (G1) aboard Lemons Forever.

“Initially, I was going to hopefully go until Kentucky Derby [Presented by Yum! Brands (G1)] day and retire then,” Guidry said. “Now, I’m kind of wanting to go back to Arlington and do that. I think it would be pretty cool. Chicago has been so good to me. I would hate to walk away from the game and not include them in it.”
