ROUND POND AND EDGAR PRADO: 2006 BREEDERS' CUP DISTAFF

Round Pond, winner of the 2006 Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), has been retired after suffering a non-displaced fracture of her left knee in the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) on April 7 at Oaklawn Park.

The five-year-old Awesome Again mare out of Gift of Dance, by Trempolino, finished third as the 1.30-to-1 favorite in the Apple Blossom.

Owner Rick Porter said Larry Bramlage, DVM, would examine X rays of the injury to determine whether surgery is required.

“I don’t think I’ll ever have another filly like Round Pond,” Porter said. “They don’t come around very often. She overcame a lot of [physical] problems, and she had an excuse for every time she got beat. She’s a tough, tough filly.”

Round Pond kicked away in the stretch of the Distaff at Churchill Downs for a 5 ¼-length victory at odds of 13.80-to-1. She had finished second and third, respectively, in the Molly Pitcher Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) and Beldame Stakes (G1) in her two previous starts for trainer Michael Matz.

Matz received Round Pond last spring when Porter split up with trainer John Servis.

Under Servis’s care, Round Pond won the 2005 Acorn Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and the Fantasy (G2), Azeri Breeders’ Cup (G3), and Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Bred in Kentucky by John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery, Round Pond won seven of 13 career starts and earned $1,998,700.
