Hawthorne jockeys Meier, Wade injured

Jockeys Randy Meier and Lyndie Wade were injured in a spill during Friday’s third race at Hawthorne Race Course.

Wade was unconscious when transported to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, Illinois. Meier, who appeared to have injured his left shoulder and arm, was also transported to the hospital.

Chestnut Gold, a three-year-old filly ridden by Wade, was euthanized after stumbling and falling in the second turn of the one-mile and 70-yard race. Arazi Exchange appeared to escape injury after tripping over the fallen Chestnut Gold, unseating Meier.

Jockey Tim Thornton, who was unseated shortly after the start of the sixth race, took off the remainder of his mounts on Friday because of soreness in his arm and abdomen.
