Jockey Russell Baze boots home six winners on Friday
Russell Baze rode six winners from seven mounts on Friday at Bay Meadows Race Course to increase his lead in the rider standings at the San Mateo, California, track.
Baze, who passed Laffit Pincay Jr. on November 30 to become Thoroughbred racing’s all-time leading rider by wins, finished third in the opener on the eight-race card but was flawless from that point forward.
Baze guided Valid Star to an eight-length romp in the second race and added a half-length win aboard Ploesti Flight in the third. Baze did not have a mount in the fourth race, but closed his banner day with four consecutive wins. He rode Apollo Gal to victory in the fifth, Senator Matty to a win in the sixth, Stage Fever to a 3 1/4-length score in the seventh, and Handsome Lover to a win in the eighth race.
Baze has 20 wins from 48 starters at the current Bay Meadows meeting. He led Joel Rosario by 13 victories prior to Saturday’s card.
Racing Hall of Fame jockey Baze was passed on February 5 by Argentine-based jockey Jorge Ricardo as the all-time leading rider by wins, but has since reclaimed the lead.
