Grade 1 winner Dawn of War dies

Posted: Thursday, November 09, 2006

Dawn of War, the upset winner of the 2005 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (G1), was euthanized on October 25 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington after foundering in all four legs.

Ken Ramsey, who bred and raced Dawn of War with his wife, Sarah, said the three-year-old Catienus colt developed an infection in his abdomen this fall, shortly after beginning a comeback attempt from a throat tumor that had interrupted his career.

"We got rid of the tumor completely, and he was training and worked out a bullet for his comeback, but he got sick on us suddenly and we sent him out to Rood and Riddle," Ramsey said. "It got worse and as a result of spiking a high temperature, he got laminitis in all four legs and we didn't have any choice but to euthanize him."

Ramsey said Dawn of War was buried at Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Trained by Dale Romans, Dawn of War scored a 3½-length win in the Breeders' Futurity at odds of 36.30-to-1 at Keeneland Race Course. He subsequently finished 11th to Stevie Wonderboy in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Belmont Park.

In two starts this year, Dawn of War finished eighth in the Central Bank Transylvania Stakes (G3) at Keeneland and fourth in the Derby Trial Stakes at Churchill Downs. He won three of nine career starts and earned $409,489.—Jeff Lowe
