Grade 3 winner Pie N Burger dies of heart attack

Posted: Thursday, June 29, 2006

Six-time stakes winner Pie N Burger died in mid-June of a heart attack while galloping at Louisiana Downs.

The eight-year-old Twining gelding out of Abarca, by Topsider, was preparing for his first start since December 2004. He underwent ankle surgery during the layoff.

Pie N Burger won the 2003 Lone Star Park Handicap (G3), Seabiscuit Handicap at Santa Anita Park, and the '03 and '04 editions of the Evangeline Mile Handicap for owners Tom and Jesse Kagele and trainer Cole Norman.

Claimed out of his first start for $62,500 in September 2000, Pie N Burger won 14 of 43 career starts and earned $924,133.

"Out of all the time I had him and he was winning all those races, he had never been sounder," Norman said. "He was showing a lot of life, and I thought we had another year to roll with him. So it's a big disappointment. He loved being at the track. He liked to play and loved his job. He's probably the best horse I ever laid my hands on."

Bred in Kentucky by Helen Alexander, Pie N Burger finished second by a nose to Midway Road in the 2004 Tenacious Handicap at Fair Grounds in his final start. He also finished second to Roses in May in the '04 Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap (G2).—Jeff Lowe
