Balance looks to stay atop division in Ashland Stakes

Posted: Thursday, April 06, 2006

Amerman Racing Stables's Balance, the leading candidate for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) next month, will make her first start outside of California on Saturday in the $500,000 Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course.

Balance figures to be a heavy favorite on the strength of her two most recent outings, victories in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) on February 11 and the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) on March 12. The Kentucky-bred Thunder Gulch filly out of the Kris S. mare Vertigineux, worked a half-mile in :51 at Keeneland on Wednesday for trainer David Hofmans.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has entered Davona Dale Stakes (G2) winner Wait a While. The Maria's Mon filly followed her 14-length romp in the Davona Dale on February 4 with a third-place finish in the Bonnie Miss Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on March 5.

Pletcher, who finished second in the 2004 Ashland with Ashado, is seeking his first victory in the 1 1/16-mile race. Pletcher won his first Keeneland training title last spring.

A second threat from California is the El Corredor filly Itty Bitty Pretty, who won the Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita by six lengths on January 7. The Doug O'Neill trainee finished third behind Balance, beaten 3¼ lengths, in the Las Virgenes.

The top two finishers from the Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs on March 18 — Bushfire and runner-up Saratoga Drive — were shipped in from Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida.

James B. Tafel's Coolwind, third in the 2005 Arlington-Washington Breeders' Cup Lassie Stakes (G3) and the Pocahontas Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, was shipped in from Chicago. The daughter of Forest Wildcat has been working well at Hawthorne Race Course in preparation for her seasonal debut.

Performing Diva, third in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G2) at Keeneland last year, captured an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on March 5 in her seasonal debut.

Sweet Sugaree, a Tiznow filly that finished second in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park on February 24 in her third career start, completes the field.

The field, in post-position order, with (sire), jockey, weight, and  trainer:

1. Bushfire (Louis Quatorze), Cornelio Velasquez, 121, Eddie Kenneally;

2. Coolwind (Forest Wildcat), Eusebio Razo Jr., 121, Greg Geier;

3. Wait a While (Maria's Mon), John Velazquez, 121, Todd Pletcher;

4. Performing Diva (Storm Cat), Rene Douglas, 121, Bill Mott;

5. Sweet Sugaree (Tiznow), Shaun Bridgmohan, 121, Frank Springer;

6. Balance (Thunder Gulch), Victor Espinoza, 121, David Hofmans;

7. Saratoga Drive (Siphon [Brz]), Javier Castellano, 121, Richard Violette, Jr.; and

8. Itty Bitty Pretty (El Corredor), Mark Guidry, 121, Doug O'Neill.
