Suspensory injury forces Achilles of Troy off Triple Crown trail

Posted: Wednesday, April 05, 2006

Multiple stakes winner Achilles of Troy was pulled off the Triple Crown trail due to an injury to his front left suspensory and some soreness in his hind quarters.

Owner Ernie Paragallo of Paraneck Stables confirmed in the Daily Racing Form that the gray or roan son of Notebook will likely be sidelined until early summer.

"He's sound, you couldn't tell anything was wrong with him," Paragallo told the Daily Racing Form. "He was just a little ouchy in behind and had a little heat. The vet said we could inject him and go on, but I'd rather run the horse in Saratoga."

Achilles of Troy stamped himself as a potential Kentucky Derby (G1) contender with a resounding 14-length romp in the Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct on January 7. He followed with a 4 3/4-length triumph in the Whirlaway Stakes on February 11 before a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Gotham Stakes (G3) on March 18, when he was vanned off following the race.

Paragallo later announced that Achilles of Troy was diagnosed with back spasms.

Achilles of Troy was working toward an expected start in the Arkansas Derby (G2) on April 15 before the setback. He has since been removed from the Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool.
