Barbaro `great' as he takes aim on Kentucky Derby

Lael Stables's Barbaro woke up on Sunday no worse for wear a day after scoring a hard-fought, half-length victory in the $1-million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

The three-year-old Dynaformer colt answered any remaining questions about his ability to perform on a fast track as he outdueled Sharp Humor to the wire to remain unbeaten in five career starts.

Barbaro now will move on to Louisville, where no doubt will be one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 6.

Ed Madden, the stable foreman for trainer Michael Matz, said Barbaro was in fine spirits Sunday morning.

"Everything is great, and it was great before the race," Madden said. "This horse is just one great individual. He ate up [Saturday] night, ate up great [Sunday] morning, and did his thing in the round pen [Sunday] morning. We're all looking forward to the [Kentucky Derby] now."

Matz said following Saturday's race that he most likely would keep Barbaro at Palm Meadows Training Center for a few weeks and ship first to Keeneland and then to Churchill Downs the week before the Derby.
