$8-million purchase Mr. Sekiguchi records first career win

Fusao Sekiguchi's Mr. Sekiguchi, an $8-million purchase at the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale, rallied from off the pace to prevail by three-quarters of a length as the 9-to-10 favorite in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Santa Anita Park.

The chestnut Storm Cat colt finished second, beaten by a half-length, in his career debut on February 18 at the Arcadia, California, track. He was unraced as a juvenile.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Mr. Sekiguchi stalked pacesetter Remembering Star from fourth then third through a half-mile in :45.24 before slipping through along the rail to gain command in the stretch.

Bred in Kentucky by William S. Farish and William. S. Kilroy, Mr. Sekiguchi is out of Grade 3 winner Welcome Surprise, by Seeking the Gold.
