Personal Ensign winner Shadow Cast retired with torn tendon

Posted: Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Shadow Cast, who scored her first Grade 1 win in the Personal Ensign Handicap on August 26 at Saratoga Race Course, has been retired after tearing a tendon in her right front leg in a workout on Tuesday at Belmont Park. The four-year-old daughter of Smart Strike out of Daily Special, by Dayjur, was credited with a half-mile drill in :49.54. She was preparing for the Beldame Stakes (G1) on Saturday at Belmont.

Owner-breeder Bill Farish said Shadow Cast would most likely be bred to A.P. Indy in 2006.

"It's a crushing blow, that's for sure," Farish said. "She worked great, and she just hurt herself pulling up. It's just too bad we won't get to see a couple more starts. She had her biggest races ahead of her."

Shadow Cast scored by 2 ¾ lengths in the Personal Ensign at odds of 14.50-to-1 for trainer Neil Howard. Her five other stakes wins include the 2004 Silverbulletday Stakes (G2) and '05 Louisville Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) on dirt and the Bayou Breeders' Cup Handicap (G3) on turf.

"She'll probably stay with Neil for a little while," Farish said. "She needs to be hand-walked for a while. He wants to get that suspensory in good shape before he sends her to the farm."

Shadow Cast won nine of 21 career starts and earned $923,751.—Jeff Lowe
