Lost in the Fog head and shoulders above Speed field

Posted: Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Grade 1 winner Lost in the Fog will spot between seven and thirteen pounds to six rivals in Saturday's $100,000 Bay Meadows Speed Handicap, a hometown race created to give the colt a last prep before the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) on October 29 at Belmont Park.

The three-year-old Lost Soldier colt is perfect in seven starts this season and unbeaten in nine career starts, races he has won by a combined 59 lengths for trainer Greg Gilchrist and owner Harry Aleo.

Lost in the Fog enters off his first Grade 1 triumph—a 4 ¾-length victory over Social Probation in the King's Bishop Stakes on August 27 at Saratoga Race Course. That performance came on the heels of a 7 ¼-length romp in the Carry Back Stakes (G2) on July 10 at Calder Race Course.

Halo Cat won his only start of 2005, capturing a 5 ½ furlong allowance/optional claiming race on September 5 at the San Mateo, California, track. The seven-year-old bay Halo gelding, who has won eight career stakes races, won three of six starts last year, including the Ernest Finley Handicap at Santa Rosa.

Stormin' Lyon, a two-time stakes winner, will try to snap a three-start winless skid dating back to his victory in the Bullet Stakes on May 27 at Hollywood Park.

The four-year-old son of Storm Boot, co-owned by Emmy Award-winning actor William Shatner, won last year's Harry Henson Handicap at Hollywood Park by a head over Wimplestiltskin.

The field, in post-position order with (sire), jockey, weight and trainer:

1. Lost in the Fog (Lost Soldier), Russell Baze, 123, Greg Gilchrist;

2. Jeffries Bay (Gone West), Frank Alvarado, 114, Jerry Hollendorfer;

3. Halo Cat (Southern Halo), Chad Schvaneveldt, 116, Jerry Hollendorfer;

4. Thirsty Guy's (Kahuna Jack), Macario Rodriguez, 114, Phillip Oviedo;

5. Seattles Best Joe (Personable Joe), Dennis Carr, 112, Howard Belvoir;

6. No Derby (Six Below), Barrington Harvey, 110, Sean McLaughlin; and

7. Stormin' Lyon (Storm Boot), Roberto Gonzalez, 116, Brian Koriner.
