Spaghetti Mouse scores shocking upset in British Colombia Derby

Posted: Saturday, September 24, 2005

Nick and Pauline Felicella's Spaghetti Mouse pulled off a shocking upset by surging to the lead in the stretch and drawing clear to a convincing 3 1/2-length victory as the longest shot on the board in the $288,330 British Colombia Derby (Can-G3) on Saturday at Hastings Race Course.

The Archers bay colt, sent off at odds of 41.80-to-1 in the 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-olds, settled into an ideal stalking position within two lengths of the pace under jockey David Wilson.

Lakeville Rush and Monashee dueled for the lead through testing fractions with Bull Ranch in hot pursuit in third. Spaghetti Mouse raced comfortably in fourth in the 11-horse field as Wilson waited patiently to call up his colt for the winning move.

Wilson swung Spaghetti Mouse four-wide on the final turn and the duo gained ground rapidly, powering into the stretch to quickly seize command. After a brief duel with runner-up Bull Ranch, Spaghetti Mouse stormed away from the field to win convincingly in his first attempt in graded stakes company.

Spaghetti Mouse completed the circuit in 1:49.30 over a fast track.

Bull Ranch was 2 3/4 lengths clear for the place, while Timeless Passion edged 2.25-to-1 favorite Alabama Rain, winner of the Canadian Derby (Can-G3) at Northlands Park on August 27, by a neck for third.

Bred in British Columbia by Black Canyon Thoroughbreds and trained by Gary Demorest, Spaghetti Mouse is out of the With Approval mare Desert Mouse.
