Stream Cat scores last-to-first win in Kentucky Cup Juvenile

Posted: Saturday, September 17, 2005

Stream Cat scored his second consecutive stakes triumph with a stirring last-to-first rally under jockey Gary Stevens in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Stakes (G3) at Turfway Park on Saturday.

The dark bay or brown Black Minnaloushe colt trailed the field through the opening half-mile, dropping more than 12 lengths behind pacesetter Short Circuit in the early stages of the race. Stevens reserved Stream Cat while saving ground, waiting patiently to unleash the powerful locomotive sitting under him.

Stevens called upon Stream Cat with three furlongs remaining and the talented two-year-old surged into contention, slicing into the lead with every stride to draw within a length in the stretch.

Stream Cat, trained by Patrick Biancone, stormed down the middle of the lane and gamely edged clear of runner-up Rungius in the final 50 yards. Stream Cat completed the 1 1/16-mile test over a fast Polytrack surface in 1:46.42, establishing a track record for the distance over Turfway's new Polytrack.

Rungius, who has hit the board in each of his four career starts, took the lead in midstretch but could not fend off Stream Cat's late rush. Cab finished one length behind Rungius in third.

Owned by Fab Oak Stable, Bobby Hurley, and Team Derby Dreams Stable, Stream Cat entered the Kentucky Cup Juvenile off a 1 1/2-length score in the With Anticipation Stakes on the turf at Saratoga Race Course.

Bred in Kentucky by Mathews Breeding and Racing, Stream Cat is the ninth winner out of the unraced Irish River (Fr) mare Water Course.
