Joey P. among winners on day for New Jersey-breds at Monmouth Park

Posted: Saturday, September 17, 2005

Grade 3 winner Joey P. scored his second stakes victory in three starts with a 1¼-length win in the Friendly Lover Handicap, one of four $100,000 stakes for New Jersey-breds highlighting the New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

The three-year-old gelding by Close Up chased the pace before reeling in pacesetter War's Prospect at the sixteenths pole and drawing clear. Joey P. covered the six furlongs in 1:08.59 on a fast track.

Trained by Frank Costa and owned by breeder John Petrini, Joey P. has won six of eight starts over two seasons and earned $276,541. He finished seventh behind Roman Ruler in the Haskell Invitational Handicap (G1) on August 7 after winning the Jersey Shore Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3), also at Monmouth Park.

Seven-year-old veteran campaigner Picnic Theme had his head in front at the three-quarters pole and galloped with ease down the stretch to win by 1¾ lengths in the Jersey Girl Handicap. Trained by Richard Dutrow, Jr., Picnic Theme covered the one mile and 70 yards in 1:42.62.

The daughter of Northern Idol, owned by Steel Your Face Stables and Emily Racing Stables, has won 11 of 34 starts, including the 2004 Queen Lib Handicap at the Meadowlands. She was bred by Carolyn Sleeter, and has earnings of $409,138.

Totally Precious, owned by Gwendolyn Kershak, wrapped up her second consecutive win in the Eleven North Handicap as she made a determined run from fifth for a three-quarter length tally.

Totally Precious, also a daughter of Northern Idol, covered the six furlongs in 1:09.89. Trained by James Connor, Totally Precious has posted two stakes wins and has earnings of $292,788 over four seasons. She was bred by George Kershak.

Holly Crest Farm's homebred Carrots Only notched the first stakes win of his three-season career as he held off a closing kick from 9-to-5 favorite Upturn to win the Jersey Breeders' Turf Highweight Handicap by three-quarters of a length in 1:43.72 for the 1 1/16 miles.

Carrots Only, as four-year-old gelding by Defrere, has won five of 16 starts, and has earnings of $183.268. He is trained by John Mazza.
