Castro breaks single meet win record at Calder

Jockey Eddie Castro broke Calder Race Course's record for most wins in a single meeting with 194 when he guided Steve Dwoskin's Mysterious Light to a dominating 10½ -length victory in the eighth race on Friday's card.

In the previous race, Castro rode Mocita to a 4 1/4-length win, equaling the record of 193 wins set in 1979 by Walter Guerra.

Castro has had no shortage of success at the Miami track, taking leading jockey honors in 2004 with 154 victories, as well as being the top rider at the past two Tropical at Calder meetings. On June 4, Castro recorded nine victories to establish a national record for most wins on a single card.

The closest any jockey had previously come to besting Guerra's record was Manoel Cruz, who rode 174 winners in 2003. Cruz is currently second behind Castro at Calder's meeting with 172 winners.
