Roman Ruler to remain at Santa Anita for Goodwood

Grade 1 winner Roman Ruler will start in the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) on Saturday at Santa Anita Park instead of the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) the same day at Belmont Park.

The three-year-old son of Fusaichi Pegasus worked four furlongs in :48.20 on Wednesday at Santa Anita. Jockey David Flores will have the mount.

Roman Ruler had been scheduled to ship to New York on Thursday for the 1 ¼-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup.

"I feel better running here," trainer Bob Baffert said. "He went real nice, he's doing good. I wasn't thrilled about the mile and a quarter and I wasn't crazy about shipping. It's a small field here, plus the weather's been bad on the East Coast. A lot of horses have been floundering on the track back there."

Santa Anita Handicap (G1) winner Rock Hard Ten also is expected for the 1 1/8-mile Goodwood. The son of Kris S. worked three furlongs on Wednesday in :34.80.

Grade 1 winner Total Impact (Chi), Grade 2 winner Choctaw Nation, and Gotaghostofachance also are slated for the Goodwood.
