Late rally lifts Prince Arch to Saranac victory

Posted: Monday, September 06, 2004

Prince Arch came from last in the six-horse field to justify his favoritism and run down close second favorite Mustanfar in the $108,200 Saranac Handicap (G3) on Monday at Saratoga Race Course. The son of Arch completed the 1 3/16-mile turf race for three-year-olds in 1:53.89 over a firm course.

Off the far turn, Lexington Stakes (G3) winner Mustanfar seized the lead from Catch the Glory, who set early fractions of :48.49 for the half-mile and 1:12.70 for six furlongs. Taken three wide by Cornelio Velasquez, Mustanfar was in front when Prince Arch, running even wider under Javier Castellano in the well-bunched field and as he started his move bumping Good Reward, finally found clear sailing and launched an outside rally.

Although the two dueled gamely, Prince Arch pushed by and won by a head to earn his second Grade 3 win this season. Catch the Glory finished third, another 2 1/4 lengths behind Mustanfar. Castellano would finish with five wins on the day.

"It has been a great day," Castellano said. "I had a lot of horse and waited to the top of the stretch to make our move. When he responded, he took off and finished strong."

Trainer Ken McPeek was in Ohio for the Cradle Stakes (G3) at River Downs, and owner Raymond H. Cottrell Sr. was willing to wait for his return to choose the next start, although it probably will be at Belmont Park.

"He shipped here well, and it looked like he was going to run a big race," Cottrell said of Prince Arch. "I was a little bit worried because it is a short stretch and I didn't know if there was enough room to get the leader. I didn't think he was going to catch him."

With nemesis Kitten's Joy absent, to whom he has lost three times in stakes this season, Prince Arch found the winner's circle for the fourth time this year. Only worse than third once since October, Prince Arch defeated Kitten's Joy by a head in the Jefferson Cup Stakes (G3) on June 12.

Bred in Kentucky by Pine Lake Bloodstock from the winning Kris mare Princess Kris (GB), Prince Arch is one of two winners from as many starters produced by the half sister to Group 3 winner Intimate Guest.
