Expected Gotham field continues preparations

Posted: Friday, March 08, 2002

The Gotham Stakes (G3), the first major New York prep for the spring classics, is shaping up as a competitive race on March 17 and could go a long way in beginning to clear up a muddled three-year-old division.

Alvin Akman's undefeated three-year-old colt Saratoga Blues continued his preparation for the Gotham with a morning gallop at Laurel Park on Friday, and he is expected to be joined in the one-mile contest by Saarland, Mayakovsky, Medaglia D'Oro, Tank's Expectations, My Man Ryan, and Parade of Music.

Saratoga Blues will be making his first graded stakes start for Anthony Dutrow after three straight wins at Aqueduct, including the Whirlaway Stakes on February 9.

"Saratoga Blues is a fantastic horse—it's time to find out how good he really is," Dutrow said.

A main rival to the local favorite figures to be Mayakovsky, who worked seven furlongs in 1"24.20 at Santa Anita on Wednesday and will be making his sophomore debut in the Gotham.

"He's doing good; no problems," said trainer Patrick Biancone. "[Jockey] Edgar Prado flew out here to work him the other day and Edgar was very happy. He told me the horse has matured a lot and has changed since he was a two-year-old. Right now everything is on schedule."

Owned by Michael Tabor, Mayakovsky has made just two career starts and has not started since finishing second to Came Home in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on September 1.

"I've got a lot of respect for Mayakovsky," Dutrow said. "He's a fast horse but he hasn't run in a long time. Saarland has ability too. By horse is going to be tested for class and should get a lot of experience out of the race."

Saarland, winner of the Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct on November 24, has not started since that race but has been a steady member on the work tab at Gulfstream Park for trainer Claude "Shug" McGaughey.

Expected to make his stakes debut in the Gotham is Parade of Music, a son of Prospector's Music owned by D. J. Stable and trained by John Servis.

Parade Music exits a win in a seven-furlong optional claiming race at Laurel Park on February 15 and has hit the board in all six career starts with three victories.

"We're going to see how he fits with these horses," Servis said. "I think he's got a lot of ability and we really had no other place to run. His past performance don't look all that impressive, but I think we burned a few of his races trying to get him to relax and rate."
