Lord Shogun captures the Alberta Derby Stakes at Stampede Park

Lord Shogun broke strongly out of the gate from the widest post in the field of 11 and led every step of the way to win the $100,000 Alberta Derby (Can-G3) on June 15 at Stampede Park. The race is the Calgary, Alberta, track's annual showcase event for three-year-olds.

A gelding by Maudlin, out of the Golden Reserve mare Aero Duchess, Lord Shogun set fractions of :23, :47.40, 1:12.80, and 1:39.20 under jockey David Wilson before hitting the wire in 1:46.20 in the 1 1/16-mile race. Regal Rebel followed 2 3/4 lengths behind in second, while Silent Shoes was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third. Intact, the 1.90-to-favorite, finished last.

Lord Shogun entered the Alberta Derby off of an allowance win at Hastings Park on May 12 in his three-year-old debut. He improved his career record to three wins and two seconds in six starts for trainer Robert Van Overschot and has earned $96,027 for owner-breeder Canyon Farms.
