Cash Run win closes Gulfstream

Posted: Saturday, March 25, 2000

Padua Stables' Cash Run, who had already raced to victory at Gulfstream Park in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Davona Dale Stakes (G2), completed the hat trick when she gamely held off Inniscarra Stable's Deed I Do to win the $200,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes (G2) by a neck on March 16, closing day at the Hallandale, Florida, facility.

Bonnie Miss S. (G2)
Gulfstream Park, March 16, $200,000, 1 1/16 miles, fast, 1:44.11
1-CASH RUN, f. 3, Seeking the Gold-Shared Interest, by Pleasant Colony.
2-Deed I Do, f. 3, Alydeed-Shepherd's Moon, by Silver Hawk.
3-Bejoyfulandrejoyce, f. 3, Dynaformer-Cynthias Whistle, by Whistling Kettle.

Trained by D. Wayne Lukas and ridden by Jerry Bailey, the three-year-old Seeking the Gold filly covered 11Ú16 miles over a fast track in 1:44.11. Cash Run has won 5-of-9 starts and $839,712.

Unlike her victory in the Davona Dale last month, Cash Run "made us sweat" in the Bonnie Miss, according to Barry Knight, Lukas's South Florida assistant.

Indeed, after entering the first turn two wide outside the longshot Dinner Pardner, Cash Run and Bailey took the lead midway around the first turn and proceeded to set brisk fractions of :23.42, :46.58, and 1:10.61.

Around the far turn, Deed I Do and jockey Mike Smith came at Cash Run and the race was on. Despite inching closer down the stretch, Deed I Do could not get by the winner. Bejoyfulandrejoyce came flying late to finish third.

"I really thought she could hold off whoever came alongside her-a horse like Deed I Do-but if she ever gets beat it will be by a horse like (Bejoyfulandrejoyce) ... a horse that makes one late run like that," Bailey said.

The day after her victory in the Bonnie Miss, Cash Run was shipped to Kentucky. "She'll go to Churchill (Downs) to train, but her next race is likely to be the Ashland (Stakes [G1] on April 8) at Keeneland," Knight said. "Then, if everything goes as planned, she'll run in the (Kentucky) Oaks ([G1] on May 5) at Churchill."

NOTEBOOK-Gulfstream's number-crunchers wanted everyone to know the 63-day meet set a Florida record for total handle with $714,686,297. But at a time when tracks are attempting to introduce its live product to new fans, Gulfstream's on-track attendance tumbled 3.9%, from 679,902 last year to 653,490. Total on-track wagering was down 0.2%, while out-of-state wagering was up 2.5% and Florida ITW was up 3.7% ... Bill Mott won his seventh training title in the past eight years, and Jorge Chavez took his second consecutive riding title.
