Cuomo says Belmont casino would 'not make sense'

Posted: Friday, February 03, 2012 11:19 AM

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo all but indicated to the editorial board at Newsday that a new casino at Belmont Park was a non-starter while touting plans for “the nation’s largest convention center and a possible casino at Aqueduct.”

“My instinct is it would not make sense to have two [casinos] back-to-back at Aqueduct and Belmont,” Cuomo reportedly said to the Newsday editorial board. “My guess is that it would not make sense … from a planning point of view.”

The Shinnecock Indian tribe has reportedly been interested in pursuing a casino at Belmont and at other sites in Suffolk County further out Long Island. Belmont is located in Nassau County. Cuomo did say Belmont needs an economically viable redevelopment plan, but did not offer specifics.

A spokeswoman for the tribe disagreed.

“The idea that the world's largest market can only support one facility at Aqueduct makes no sense,” said Shinnecock spokeswoman Beverly Jensen. “Belmont could bring in hundreds of millions in revenue in Nassau County without losing one single job in Queens.”

One possible option for Belmont, and an idea floated by Nassau County Executive Edward Mongana in the same report, was other sports and entertainment options for the Elmont racetrack.

“Nassau County has received interest from a developer with the financial means to establish a soccer stadium complemented by mixed-use development, which would enhance the current raceway,” Mangano said.

Cuomo touched on other gaming- and entertainment-related topics during the meeting, including endorsing a reform of the state’s gaming policies that would include a review of subsidies paid to the New York Racing Association and the creation of a state gaming commission.

“These functions have been so dysfunctional for so long,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo also restated his desire to amend the state constitution to legalize non-Indian gambling in the Empire State. Genting, which operates Resorts World New York City Casino at Aqueduct, would expand the current racino if such a measure clears the legislature and a public referendum. The expansion would make the Aqueduct racino a full-fledged casino, without sports gambling.

“Casinos are not an ideal form of economic development, but this is not an ideal world,” Cuomo said.

mediocre politician, and probably as honest as his predessesors, casinos are going to kill racing period, they will promise anything to the racing community to get licenses then they will change the law and screw them, what about all the breeding farms in upstate new york and the investments that were made in anticipation of bigger purses, they dont care, its all about the fast buck, even if casinos are a social canser that gives nothing back they dont care, even if they kill local buisiness by offering free booze and subsidized food and retail goods, even if they create poor paying jobs, even if they create urban blyth around them, cuomo doesnt care ,he cares about linning his own pockets, just like lowell wicker did in connecticut, never had to run again after setting up foxwoods, set for life, thats what they want, and racing just can not afford to pay,and thats the ugly truth.

Gov Cuomo has more moves than a 4-way cold tablet. First he takes credit for the casino at Aqueduct and how he is helping the horse owners, fans and NYRA. Later we find out that he met with Genting and plans to close Aqueduct in favor of a new convention center. Then even before the casino opened he charged the horse owners a surcharge on their purses but tells them they will make it back when the casino opens. Now he tells the racing public that Belmont will become a winter racing site but nixes the thought of a casino at Belmont. Why not renovate the existing convention center by adding on vertically? The last time visitors came to Queens was for a Worlds Fair. Leave the current deal in place for the current racino at Aqueduct and stop trying to threaten NYRA and the potential revenue stream that will get them out of hock. The racing public should tell Cuomo to feed his cold on the back of someone else and stop starving the racing public.
