Jockeys’ Guild, Churchill Downs Inc. reach agreement

Posted: Monday, January 23, 2012 10:14 AM

Although payment details are not being released, Churchill Downs Inc. has reached an agreement to with the Jockeys’ Guild to subsidize rider health insurance, life insurance, and disability payments.

Guild members at Churchill tracks will continue to contribute a per-mount fee to such insurance policies and Churchill also will make contributions at its four tracks, which include Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, Calder Race Course, and Fair Grounds.

“We sincerely appreciate the commitment made by CDI to support the benefits that impact our jockeys,” said Terry Meyocks, the Guild’s national manager. “This agreement will directly benefit approximately 950 active, retired, and permanently disabled members. It is critical that we receive support from all of our racetrack partners within the industry.“

Churchill Downs Inc. informed the Guild in late 2011 that it planned not to renew track contributions this year. The Guild launched public relations and political efforts to pressure the track owner.

The Guild received a favorable response in its efforts from the California Horse Racing Board, which made it clear that Churchill could lose its ability to operate its advance-deposit wagering platform, TwinSpires.com, in the state if an agreement with the Guild was not reached.

Through 2011, Churchill Downs Inc. was paying a total of $330,000 to assist in insurance costs at its four tracks.

The agreement should pave the way for TwinSpires.com to be approved to operate in California. In December, the CHRB sent a not-so-subtle message by renewing through 2012 the ADW licenses of XpressBet.com, which is owned by the Stronach Group, and Television Games Network, which is owned by Betfair. It extended the TwinSpires agreement only through April, just days before the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), which is the largest handle day of the year.

Tracks owned by the Stronach Group, which include California’s Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields, have renewed agreements to make the insurance payments. TVG/Betfair does not own U.S. tracks. Speaking on behalf of the Guild, Barry Broad said TVG provides $250,000 in advertising time to promote jockey health and welfare issues and is discussing a bigger commitment going forward.

The Guild currently provides life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and temporary disability benefits to its active members, as well as life insurance and aid to the permanently disabled members.
