Steeplechase trainer Michael O’Brien dies at age 68

Michael O’Brien, a champion steeplechase rider and trainer, died in Dublin, Ireland on December 23 at age 68.

O’Brien rode several notable horses for trainer Jonathan Sheppard, including 1973 champion steeplechaser Athenian Idol.

His career was cut short, however, in 1974 when a spill aboard Athenian Idol in the Carolina Cup left the rider paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair.

Though the injury derailed his riding career, it did not stop O’Brien from winning races. O’Brien returned to Ireland following the accident and began training horses with remarkable success.

One of O’Brien’s most successful horses was Bright Highway, who swept the coveted Mackeson Gold Cup-Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup double in 1980. To date, only three horses have accomplished the feat.

O’Brien was also a three-time winner of the Irish Grand National, with King Spruce (Ire) in 1982, Vanton in 1992, and Glebe Lad in 1999.

O’Brien, who retired from training in 2009, was the younger brother of New York-based trainer Leo O’Brien, who was also a steeplechase rider in North America.
