Successful Nebraska horseman Kemling dies

Paul Kemling, a longtime Thoroughbred owner and breeder and a member of the Nebraska Horse Racing Hall of Fame, died at the age of 91 on December 15 in Grand Island, Nebraska.

A resident of Aurora, Nebraska, Kemling and his brother, the late Orville Kemling, teamed up to breed and race a number of stakes winners, including $653,534-earner Amadevil. Other stakes winners campaigned by the Kemlings included Roman Zipper, a career earner of $392,782 who often ran against Amadevil, and Bold Accent, a nine-time stakes winner at Fonner Park.

Paul and Orville Kemling were inducted into the Nebraska Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1981 and were later joined by Amadevil and Roman Zipper. Paul Kemling was the breeder of the horses that Orville trained. On race days, Paul Kemling would join his brother at the track in hopes of earning a winner's circle photo.

Paul Kemling attributed the good fortune he and his brother enjoyed to luck.

“I’d say it’s about as much luck as anything,” Paul Kemling said in a 1993 interview. “You use your best judgment and hope it works for you.”
