Strike the Gold, winner of the 1991 Kentucky Derby (G1), was euthanized following a paddock accident at Karacabey Stud in Turkey.

The 23-year-old son of Alydar was the oldest living Kentucky Derby (G1) winner at the time of his death. He stumbled while jogging in his paddock and broke his left front pastern, leading to his euthanization.

Bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, Strike the Gold won six of 31 career starts and earned $3,475,026 in four seasons. In addition to his classic win, Strike the Gold won the 1992 Pimlico Special Handicap (G1) and finished second in the 1991 Belmont Stakes (G1) and the 1992 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). He also won the 1991 Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course and 1992 Nassau County Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park.

Strike the Gold stood at Vinery in Lexington upon his retirement in 1994 and was moved to Turkey in 1998, where his progeny include seven-time Turkish champion Sabirli and Turkish champion stayer Arsenic. His North American progeny was led by Grade 3 placed stakes winner Klabin’s Gold.

Strike the Gold is the sire of 193 winners, including ten group/graded stakes winners, from 16 crops of racing age through Tuesday, according to statistics provided by The Jockey Club. He was a hit at stud in Turkey, where he was the leading sire.

What a horse! But aren't they all? Even your cheap claimers have heart, mind, and spirit. I love 'em, love 'em, love 'em!
RIP

Rest in Peace, Strike the Gold baby. You were and still are my most favorite horse of all time. I followed you throughout your racing career, from the time you were three onward, and tried to follow you through out the time you were a stallion. I will miss you very dearly. Love you very much babycakes. I will miss you, RIP.
