Castleton Lyons and Thoroughbred Times are proud to be co-sponsoring the Sixth Annual Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award and are taking entries for the prestigious prize. Presented to the author of the best book about Thoroughbred racing published in 2011, the award comes with a $10,000 cash prize, making it one of the richest book awards in the world.

Named for the late founder of Castleton Lyons who conceived the award in 2006 to reward literary excellence, the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award is presented annually to the author of the best book published about an aspect of Thoroughbred racing.

“We are pleased to once again sponsor this prestigious award with Castleton Lyons,” said Mark Simon, president of the Lexington-based publication company Thoroughbred Times. “The first five awards have featured great books and the competition has been of the highest order. Our judges look forward to reading the outstanding books that will be submitted for this year’s competition.”

The deadline for submissions for the 2011 Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award is January 20, 2012. The finalists will be named in March.

The announcement of the winner of the Book Award will be made in April at a reception at Castleton Lyons in Lexington. The winner also receives a Tipperary Crystal trophy. The runners-up will also each receive a Tipperary Crystal trophy and a check for $1,000.

Nominees for the Book Award can be in any category: fiction, non-fiction, handicapping, training, children’s, health care, photography, etc., as long as it pertains to an aspect dealing with Thoroughbreds. Judges selected by Thoroughbred Times will critique books on content, plus design, layout, and artwork, when relevant, to select the 2011 winner.

To submit nominees to the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award, authors or publishing companies should send eight (8) copies of the book, along with the nomination form  to: Book Award, Thoroughbred Times, 2008 Mercer Rd, Lexington, KY  40511.
