Arc weekend wagering triples in North America

Posted: Thursday, October 27, 2011 1:51 PM

Total wagering handle in North America on the two cards on Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) weekend from Longchamp tripled this year, compared with 2010.

Kentucky-based AmWest Entertainment distributed the French simulcast signal for the first time to outlets around the U.S. and Canada on October 1-2 as well as offering wagering. Seven Group 1 races were featured on the Arc program on October 2, while four Group 2 races were run on October 1.

Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU), which directs wagering on French races both domestically and abroad under the auspices of France-Galop, did not release handle figures, but Aymeric Verlet, international director of the PMU said he was delighted with the results.

“It was an inspiring weekend of racing,” Verlet said.

Nelson Clemmens, chief executive officer of AmWest Entertainment, which is headquartered in Prospect, Kentucky, was pleased with his company’s first year of offering the simulcast signal to North American outlets for France’s marquee weekend of racing.

“We are proud to be partnered with PMU to bring Arc Weekend to the North American market, which responded with unprecedented media coverage and sharply increased wagering and viewing results. We are looking very forward to building on our successful simulcast program in 2012,” Clemmens said.

German-bred three-year-old filly Danedream captured the Arc, Europe’s middle-distance championship, on October 2 and paid $52.20 to North American backers after leading a procession of fillies across the finish line in first, second and third in a stakes-record performance. On-track attendance at Longchamp was 50,250, which was up 17% from 2010.

International wagering on the Arc program pushed the overall handle on Arc Weekend considerably higher, with the Hong Kong market a sizable share of betting, Verlet said.

Earlier this year, the AmWest Entertainment distributed the simulcast signal for all 11 programs of the Dubai International Racing Carnival and Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) day at Meydan Racecourse to North and South American and the Caribbean outlets. The company is now planning for the distribution of the 2012 Carnival and World Cup signals.
