Longtime horseman Bentley Smith dead

Posted: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:30 PM

Bentley L. Smith, who managed Frances Genter Stable for nearly 30 years, died on Saturday in Palm Beach, Florida. He was 88.

Smith’s late wife, Jean, was the daughter of the late Frances Genter, who won the 1990 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic with Unbridled, whom Smith purchased as a foal from the Tartan Farm dispersal

The 1990 Kentucky Derby provided racing with one of its most memorable images when trainer Carl Nafzger famously called the race for Mrs. Genter, saying, "He's gonna win, Mrs. Genter, he's gonna win! He's gonna win! We won it! You won the Kentucky Derby! Oh, Mrs. Genter, I love you, Mrs. Genter!"

A native of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Smith ran Genter’s stable until her death in 1992. Other highlights during Smith’s tenure include Genter’s homebred Smile winning the 1986 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).

Smith, who kept a small number of broodmares at Gaineway in Lexington, continued to race and breed horses after Genter’s passing and he won the 2007 Alabama Stakes (G1) with homebred Lady Joanne, who finished fourth in that year’s Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).

Lady Joanne was named for his second wife, Joan. Smith bred and raced her dam, Oatsee, by Unbridled, and sold her at the 2006 Keeneland January sale for $135,000 to Belvedere Farm, agent for Mike Lauffer and Bill Cubbedge amongst a large group of his broodmares. For Lauffer and Cubbedge, Oatsee produced 2011 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Shackleford.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
