Personalized euthanized at Old Friends

Posted: Thursday, October 20, 2011 1:30 PM

Personalized, one of only four foals sired by Racing Hall of Fame member Precisionist, was euthanized recently at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, after fracturing a hip. The 21-year-old resided at Old Friends since 2008.

“We welcomed Personalized to Old Friends because of our great love for her sire but it wasn’t long before her kind eyes and gentle disposition make her special regardless of her lineage,” said Michael Blowen, Old Friends’ president and founder.

Owned and bred by Fred Hooper, who also owned and bred Precisionist, Personalized was winless in eight career starts. She was found in 2008 in a feedlot in Yakima, Washington, by the Columbia Basin Equine Rescue and found a permanent home at Old Friends.

Personalized produced nine foals. Four of the foals started and she was represented by three winners—the filly No You Didn’t (by Great Above) and geldings Chief Inspector (by Gate Dancer) and Instantpersonality (by Wheaton).

Precisionist was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003. He won the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter in 1985 after a season which included a win in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). Precisionist was found to be nearly infertile and was the sire of just four foals before dying in 2006.

Gail, Mr. Hooper died in 2000, long before this mare ended up in a feedlot. I knew the man, and he dearly loved his horses.

Thousands of TB's (and all breeds of horses) are standing in dirty feed lots, destined for slaughter,as we speak. This is old news and is well known throughout the industry.

How could she be owned by Hooper and still end up in a feedlot. I do not understand some of this. How can you take a mare to auction, receive no bids and abandon her there. Imust be missing something important.
