McLeod, CEO of Hastings Race Course owner, dies

Ross McLeod, who served as chief executive officer of Hastings Race Course owner Great Canadian Gaming Corp., died at the age of 59 on September 6.

McLeod oversaw Great Canadian Gaming Corp, which also owns three Standardbred tracks and ten casinos throughout Canada and Washington State. McLeod founded Great Canadian in 1982.

McLeod also owned Thoroughbreds, racing horses in Canada and California. He maintained a broodmare band and stands first-year stallion Elusive Warning, a Group 3 winner, in Madera, California.

“Ross will be fondly remembered as leader of over 4,000 employees across Canada and Washington State [as a] confidant to his executive team and a true visionary for the Canadian gaming and entertainment industry,” the company’s board of directors said in a release.

Great Canadian Gaming noted McLeod’s commitment to charitable endeavors and his 1999 “Outstanding Contribution to Canadian Gaming Industry” award and his 2007 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year regional award for hospitality and tourism awards.

Great Canadian said company president Rod Baker would serve as interim chief executive officer.
