On-track handle up, total handle down for Prairie Meadows

On-track handle at Prairie Meadows Racetrack increased by 5.7% during its 2011 Thoroughbred meeting, which concluded on August 13. However, total handle dropped 2.7% due to declining simulcast figures.

The Altoona, Iowa, track averaged a live handle of $57,403 per race day compared with $54,321 in 2010.

Simulcast wagering on the live races declined 3.6% in 2011 to $491,200 per race day. Last year, the daily simulcast average was $563,786.

“I think we had a lot of positive things this year,” Prairie Meadows Director of Racing Derron Heldt said. “We had some tough weather, first with the rain and then the heat, so I’m happy with everything. It’s been a real solid meet.”

The 2011 racing season also saw new riding and training records set at Prairie Meadows for wins during a meeting.

Jockey Terry Thompson rode 97 winners during the 2011 meet, besting his previous mark of 94 wins in 2002. In his eighth meet-leading season since 2000, Thompson also set the Prairie Meadows record for win percentage (25.8%) and became the track’s first rider to break $2-million in earnings, with $2,058,869.

Trainer Chris Richard eclipsed Dick Clark’s 2006 record of 64 wins by one, tallying the bulk of those victories for owner Maggi Moss, who earned her ninth straight owner’s title.
