Canadian Hall of Fame owner-breeder Lawson dies

Canadian Hall of Fame owner-breeder Mel Lawson died on Wednesday in Toronto. He was 88.

The successful owner and breeder raced horses with his wife, Barbara, under the Jim Dandy Stable banner, including Canadian champions Let’s Go Blue, Eternal Search, and Ginger Gold.

“He was a true gentleman,” said Woodbine-based conditioner Sid Attard, who enjoyed great success with Lawson for many years. “I miss him a lot already. He was a good person. When he won a race, he was so happy. But when he lost, he didn’t have a long face. He was competitive, but he never questioned what you did. He supported you. I’ll remember him as a very, very nice man.”

A former Canadian Football League player who was on the Grey Cup-winning Hamilton Wildcats squad of 1943, Lawson was associated with plenty of champion horses in more than 50 years in racing. Eternal Search won 15 stakes races in securing Canada’s champion sprinter honors in 1981 before being champion older female there in 1982 and 1983.

Let’s Go Blue secured the Sovereign Award as champion older horse in 1986 and Ginger Gold was Canada’s champion two-year-old filly of 2001.

Another top stakes winner for Lawson was his homebred 1977 Natalma Stakes winner Pottahawk. He secured his first stakes win in 1966 with Manitoba Stakes winner Carodana.

In May of 2010, Lawson, who worked for 62 years at the family’s Lawson Lumber, was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, in the builders’ category. That same year, his Destroy was named Outstanding broodmare. A homebred, Destroy has produced three stakes winners, including 2010 Play the King Stakes (Can-G2) winner Smokey Fire.

The visitation was scheduled for Smith’s Funeral Home at 485 Brant Street on Thursday (July 28) from 7-9 p.m. A private family service and interment will take place on Friday.
