Arlington Million winner Awad dies at Old Friends

Posted: Saturday, July 23, 2011 5:02 PM

Multiple Grade 1 winner Awad has died of an apparent heart attack at Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky.

The 21-year-old by Caveat was found early Saturday morning in his paddock at Old Friends, where he had pensioned in 2006. The cause of death was determined to be a heart attack, although a full necropsy will be conducted at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington.

“It’s been an honor to be associated with such a champion as Awad,” said Old Friends owner Michael Blowen. “He was a favorite at the farm and a favorite of so many of the visiting fans. He will be sorely missed.”

Maryland-bred Awad, a Ryehill Farm homebred, won 14 of 70 career starts and earned $3,270,131. His victories include a record-breaking performance in winning the 1995 Arlington Million Stakes (G1), setting an Arlington Park course record for 1¼ miles in 1:58.69. He also won the 1993 Secretariat Stakes (G1), 1995 Early Times Manhattan Stakes (G1), and the 1997 Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap (G1) in a Saratoga Race Course record time of 2:23.20 for 1½ miles on turf.

One of four winners from six starters out of multiple stakes winner Dancer’s Candy, by Noble Dancer (GB), Awad was also the sire of 76 winners from 125 starters.

“He was a great horse, he had a tremendous impact on everyone,” said trainer, David Donk. “He got the best care of his life while at Old Friends, and we’re so glad we got to visit him there last year.”

I Thank God, for people like Michael & Diane Blowen that have given everything they have, to these Awesome Horses, which are allowed to live out their final days in comfort.
